Carriageway markings on a motorway include a warning that a junction is near (J14 in this case) and, once the junction is passed, a half-chevron indicating that traffic is merging from the left. The distance markers (below) are not restricted to motorways, and indicate the distance, in hundreds of yards, to the next point at which a driver may leave a motorway or other route, or a roundabout.
